Coach K

Kimberly Mendelsohn aka Coach K started Try a Tri in January of 2008, because of her deep love and passion for the sport. She wanted to create a program that removed hesitations and broke down intimidations so that anyone could become a triathlete.  She has been a triathlete since 2004 when a friend and coach tempted her to “tri”.  After just one indoor sprint triathlon, she was hooked for life!

Her passions and central focus in life are coaching, the art and science of triathlon training, Jesus and cooking great food. Coach has been happily married to her husband, Robert Patallas since 1995.  They live in west Wichita with their 3 Australian Shepherds - Blue, Cowboy and Libby.

She has had the distinct pleasure of learning from and being coached by some of the best triathlon coaches including Jay Buckmaster, Dave Scott, Sheila Taormina, Luis Vargas of Markallenonline,  and her personal coach, Eddie Herd.  In January 2009, she became a certified USAT Level I coach.

Coach K Triathlon Philosophy

  1. Start where you are.  You won’t stay there.
  2. Put your pride aside.
  3. Fit triathlon into your life; not your life into triathlon.
  4. Train consistently with a goal and a smart plan.
  5.  Don’t let who you have been keep you from becoming who you can be.
  6. Build a big aerobic fitness base; then work on speed.
  7. Use the sport; don't let it use you.
  8. Achieve health first and then fitness.
  9. Be patient.  Be persistent.
  10. Absolutely everyone can be a triathlete.
